Estudo da ABES mostra que áreas irregulares nas 27 capitais brasileiras perdem um volume de água suficiente para abastecer mais de 2,7 milhões de pessoas durante 1 ano

O IBGE identificou por meio do Censo 2010, nas 27 capitais do país, mais de 7 milhões de pessoas vivendo em áreas irregulares, em precárias condições com relação aos serviços essenciais. A regularização do abastecimento nessas áreas pode significar a recuperação de 27% de todo o volume perdido de água nas capitais – 485,5 milhões de m³ por ano, volume suficiente para abastecer 2,7 milhões de pessoas durante 1 ano.

Estes dados integram o estudo “Perdas de água nas capitais do Brasil um olhar sobre as áreas irregulares”, que a Associação Brasileira de Engenharia Sanitária e Ambiental – ABES divulga para marcar a Semana da Água.  O relatório completo está disponível no site da ABES: http://abes-dn.org.br/pdf/Perdas_agua_nas_Capitais_1760317.pdf

Além dos óbvios benefícios que essa economia de água representa ao meio ambiente, a regularização tem impactos bastante significativos à saúde pública: segundo estudo recente da Organização Mundial da Saúde, intervenções que melhoraram o acesso à água potável efetivamente reduziram a morbidade por diarreia em crianças em 45%.

Para o presidente nacional da ABES, Roberval Tavares de Souza, é urgente que os agentes de saneamento no país se mobilizem para que se realize a regularização destas ligações a fim de reduzir perdas de água e levar mais saúde para população. ”É uma questão de saúde, de qualidade de vida, de inclusão social e de cidadania”, frisa o engenheiro.
