A Câmara Técnica de Saúde e Saneamento em Comunidades Isoladas, coordenada por Ana Lúcia Brasil, e o Programa Jovens Profissionais do Saneamento – JPS, que tem coordenação de Thomas Ficarelli, da Associação Brasileira de Engenharia Sanitária e Ambiental Seção São Paulo – ABES-SP promoveram, na última sexta-feira, 26, palestra sobre as condições de educação, saúde e meio ambiente de uma população indígena do Amazonas. O tema foi abordado pela especialista em Educação Ambiental da Faculdade de Saúde Pública da Universidade de São Paulo – USP, Renata Ferraz de Toledo. O evento ocorreu na sede da entidade, na capital paulista.

Antes de dar início à apresentação, Ana Lúcia Brasil lembrou aos presentes que a Câmara está reunindo uma série de trabalhos que vai dar origem a um caderno técnico. “Será um guia de escolha de soluções adequadas para as comunidades isoladas de tratamento e reúso de água”, disse. “A ideia é que a publicação seja utilizada por quem decide no nível municipal sobre como ajudar essas comunidades, tanto para aquela da periferia da área urbana como a da zona rural.”

ctjpEm relação ao tema e conteúdo da palestra, Renata Ferraz de Toledo explicou que “Educação, Saúde de Meio Ambiente: uma pesquisa-ação no Distrito de Iauaretê do município de São Gabriel da Cachoeira – AM” foi a tese de doutorado defendida por ela, em 2006. O trabalho, disse, fez parte de um projeto maior – realizado entre 2004 e 2008 -, por meio de um convênio entre a USP e a Fundação Nacional de Saúde – FUNASA, que é responsável pela implementação do saneamento em terras indígenas.

Impactos da falta de saneamento

  A pesquisa foi realizada no Distrito de Iauaretê, uma comunidade indígena, situado no município de São Gabriel da Cachoeira, na fronteira com a Colômbia, no extremo Noroeste do Estado do Amazonas. Segundo a pesquisadora, este é o município com mais índios do Brasil, eles são 99% da população local. “A comunidade, que possui três mil indígenas, não conta com nenhum serviço de saneamento, seja de abastecimento de água, seja coleta, tratamento de esgoto ou resíduos”, destacou Renata.

Conforme explicou Renata, a pesquisa mostrou os principais comportamentos de risco relacionados à saúde da comunidade. São eles: “elevada concentração populacional e ausência de saneamento, disposição de dejetos e resíduos próximo a domicílios e fontes de água; praticas insalubres na manipulação dos alimentos; a contaminação das fontes de água e julgamento pela aparência, ou seja, se está branca, é boa; proliferação de mosquitos transmissores de malária”, diz. O projeto realizou um inquérito parasitológico na população. E os resultados não poderiam ser diferentes. ”Foram feitos 825 exames de fezes e 70 % dos habitantes tinham algum tipo de parasita intestinal, em pleno século 21”, critica.

As questões culturais presentes no cotidiano e nas formas como eles lidam com o meio ambiente também impactam a vida da comunidade também foi destacada. “Ao mesmo tempo em que eles incorporam lógicas urbanas como acesso à escola, emprego e serviços de saúde, eles valorizam a tradição como as práticas alimentares e sanitárias. Do ponto de vista da saúde pública, há um grande conflito e não há dúvidas de que essas condições estão dispostas a enormes riscos”, frisou.

Importância do tema

Renata Toledo agradeceu o convite para apresentar a palestra e ressaltou que a discussão sobre o saneamento aparentemente parece que não tem nenhuma inovação para ser pensada, “mas quando consideramos a subjetividade humana, os componentes socioculturais que existem em cada realidade, é preciso atenção redobrada no que se faz e se propõe”, afirmou. “É importante trazer a discussão para esse lado, quando apesar de termos, cientificamente, avançado muito nas questões de saúde e saneamento, do ponto de vista da infraestrutura, quando se trata de comunidades tradicionais, essa subjetividade traz enormes desafios”, disse a educadora ambiental. “Para mim é um privilégio compartilhar com um grupo que já discute o tema – a Câmara Técnica de Comunidades Isoladas – um trabalho que foi feito por meio de uma experiência metodológica que ouve os interesses e as necessidades. Mas só isso não resolve, é preciso haver as políticas públicas adequadas”, concluiu.

A palestra, na visão do coordenador do JPS-SP, Thomas Ficarelli, foi muito gratificante. “Trata de um assunto bastante diverso em relação à nossa vida na grande cidade, com toda essa infraestrutura, política pública de saneamento e uma discussão em alta [sobre o tema]. Mas e onde não tem saneamento? Onde sequer a parte de educação sanitária das pessoas não é desenvolvida? Como isso se dá nos confins das fronteiras do território nacional, no meio da floresta amazônica?”, questiona.

Essa experiência da professora, continuou Thomas, foi muito profunda e nos mostrou o quão complexo e difícil é trazermos soluções para esse tipo de comunidade. “Foi uma atividade fundamental. É mais do que necessário conhecermos esses mais diversos contextos, para sabermos a melhor maneira de atuar e alcançar a maior quantidade de pessoas com de serviços de saneamento e qualidade de vida”, ressaltou.

Para a coordenadora da Câmara, Ana Lúcia Brasil, “a reunião foi um sucesso. Os jovens [do JPS] estão muito entusiasmados. Esta é uma forma de ficar por dentro do que está sendo feito na academia, com instituições como a FUNASA, além do governo da Amazônia, para enfrentar essa questão do saneamento nas comunidades indígenas. Foi ótimo e repetiremos sempre essa parceria.”
