Painel da ONU sobre Água vai mobilizar ação política e investimento

Escassez de água afeta mais de 40% da população global e índice deve aumentar nos próximos anos; pelo menos 663 milhões não têm acesso à água potável.

A ONU e o Banco Mundial lançaram nesta quinta-feira, 21 de janeiro, um painel de alto nível sobre a água.

O secretário-geral da ONU, Ban Ki-moon, e o presidente da instituição financeira, Jim Yong Kim, disseram que o objetivo do grupo é mobilizar ações urgentes para se alcançar o Objetivo de Desenvolvimento Sustentável 6, que trata da água e do saneamento.

Mudança climática

O anúncio foi feito no momento em que vários países estão sofrendo com a falta d’água e desastres relacionados à água que vão piorar devido a falta de melhores decisões políticas para combater a mudança climática.

Ban disse que “a água é um recurso precioso e crucial para se alcançar os Objetivos de Desenvolvimento Sustentável, SDG. Segundo ele, o novo painel pode ajudar a motivar ações que transformem ideias em realidade.

As Nações Unidas afirmaram que as enchentes e outros desastres relacionados à água são responsáveis por 70% de todas as mortes causadas por desastres naturais.

Acesso à àgua

Mais de 1,7 bilhão de pessoas vivem perto de bacias hidrográficas onde o uso da água supera a recarga. Mais de 80% da água poluída por atividades humanas é despejada em rios ou mar sem qualquer tipo de tratamento.

Além disso, pelo menos 663 milhões de pessoas não têm acesso à água potável e 2,4 bilhões não têm acesso a serviços básicos de saneamento.

Segundo a ONU, quase mil crianças morrem todos os dias no mundo devido a doenças causadas por água poluída ou falta de saneamento, como por exemplo, diarreia.

O painel vai ser chefiado pelos presidentes do México e das Ilhas Maurício e incluirá vários chefes de Estado e de governo de países desenvolvidos e em desenvolvimento.
